Black History Month, held every February, is a month-long commemoration of the African diaspora history. It has been celebrated yearly in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom since 1976, although it is held in October in the UK. In the U.S., this event is also called the African-American History Month. When it first started, it was called Negro History Week. It began in 1926 with Carter G. Woodson. He aimed to educate the American people not only about the history of African Americans but also their cultural background, achievements, and contribution to the society. Throughout the history of African Americans, you will find a long list of legendary icons who have excelled in their chosen fields. Below are some of those who belong to this roster. George Washington Carver was an inventor, scientist, botanist, and teacher. He was born in 1864 and is the second person appointed to the hall of fame. His popularity came from his intensive agricultural research and his promotion of crops to be used as alternatives to cotton. He also worked to improve the quality of life of agriculturists by presenting various ways on how to do that. One example is his famous 44 practical bulletins that contained 105 recipes that made use of peanuts as ingredients. He also included information on how to make 100 different products from peanuts that were practical at home and farm such as dyes, paints, nitroglycerin, and cosmetics, among others. Who doesn’t know Michael Jackson? He wouldn’t be called the King of Pop for nothing. He was a singer, dancer, songwriter, and one of the most successful music artists in the world. His contributions to the music industry are phenomenal and are widely recognized even after his death in 2009. Some of his greatest hits include Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller, Scream, and many more. He also popularized unique dancing techniques such as the robot and moonwalk, which are widely imitated worldwide. One of the greatest boxers who ever lived, Muhammad Ali was born and raised in Louisville Kentucky. Out of the 108 matches that he engaged in, he won 100 of it. He also became the 1960 Olympic light-heavyweight champion. He was born Cassius Clay but he later changed his name to Muhammad Ali after he converted and joined the Nation of Islam. Another famous athlete is Tiger Woods who dominated the sport of golf after claiming the US Masters at Augusta in 1997. He has the record score of 270 that he got at the age of 21. He is the first and youngest African-American who was able to achieve such an amazing feat.
